What is a Needle Valve and how it Works?
Needle valves are basically designs with a small opening associated with a plunger that looks like an ordinary sewing needle. The main purpose of the needle valve is to control the flow of the liquids or gases through the typical valve mechanism. That mechanism allows us to adjust the flow rate of gas or liquid to any specific desired number.
The most common use of needle valve can be observed in motorcar engine apart from other various applications. Along with tapered plunger, a needle valve also features a screw that into an assembly known as seat. The seat situated on an exact position that allow and make it possible to adjust the flow to either increase or decrease the flow through the valve.
Needle valve makes it possible with great extent and precision to regulate the flow of gas or any other oil or liquid.
Needle valves are mostly manufactured from brass or stainless steel materials as these materials are proving to be less vulnerable to the depreciation and other pressures.

Another use of needle valve is in home appliances specifically the equipment that controls the temperature of water within a specific system. For example, some residential water heaters utilize this type of valve as a type of bleed valve that makes it possible to relieve pressure on the water flowing through the device.
Now coming back to the topic again, where the many advantages are associated with needle valves, there are some disadvantages too, which we will discuss in below-stated lines.
Advantages of Needle Valves
- Needle valves give us the great control over the flow rate of a liquid or gas which in reality, gives us the luxury to consume the fuel according to our desire. For example, in a motorcar engine, it is needle valve which is responsible to regulate the fuel flow rate.
- These valves can work both ways. Whether you want to increase the flow rate or happy with decreasing it.
- Beside the control on flow rate, it also stables the pressure too. The pressure loss is on the minimum side as compare to the other same like valves that are available in the market.
Disadvantages of Needle Valves
• While there are many advantages to using a needle valve, there is one major disadvantage too. Unlike other types, you can’t visually observe the position of the screw or the handle used to control the positioning of the screw in the valve that determine if the valve is open or closed.
